Geek BD: November 13-18

Geek BD is a weekly column in which we discuss the week's blu-ray releases, both new releases and catalog titles. One title will serve as that week's pick with a selection of other notable titles mentioned. Clicking the title of a film will take you to that disc's Amazon page for ordering. This weeks new releases aren’t too exciting, unless you really loved Brave, which was admittedly one of the summer’s better films, but there are some interesting catalog releases that range from distinguished classics to genre oddities making their Blu-ray debut.

Pick of the Week

Watchmen

Watchmen – Collector’s Edition

Zack Snyder’s epic adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel masterpiece wasn’t for everyone, but it certainly struck a chord with audiences. This “Ultimate Cut” incorporates the animated Black Freighter story into Snyder’s Director’s Cut for a total running tome of about 215 minutes. Long out of print and hard to find, Warner Bros. have re-released the Ultimate Cut with some new packaging that includes the original graphic novel.

New Releases

Brave

Brave

Easily the biggest new release title this week, Disney/Pixar’s Brave hits Blu-ray shelves with both a five-disc set (3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy) as well as a standard Blu-ray (which also includes the DVD and Digital Copy). While not the biggest hit critically or commercially, I enjoyed Brave quite a bit. I can’t see myself grabbing this unless it goes on sale sometime in the future.

As for other new releases this week, Oliver Stone’s Savagesis out in a new unrated cut, those who missed Todd Solondz’s black comedy Dark Horsein theaters now have a chance to catch up, and you can finally not-bother-watching the alien-invasion comedy The Watch on home video! While I enjoyed Savages one time, I doubt I’ll ever bother with it again, and while it has some great elements, overall Dark Horse just didn’t quite work for me.

Catalog Releases

empire

Empire of the Sun

Aside from Lawrence of Arabia(also available in a massive box set), the other big catalog release (at least for this writer) is Steven Spielberg’s WWII drama Empire of the Sun. From E.T. - The Extraterrestiral, to Jaws and the Indiana Jones films, 2012 has seen some great Speilberg films recieve fine Blu-ray releases. This release looks to be getting Digibook packaging as a standard, while in the past the packaging had been exlcusive Best Buy with both the Jaws and E.T. releases of Spielberg's films.  Just in time for Speilberg’s Lincoln, the time-travel comedy classic Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and D.W. Griffith’s Abraham Lincolnwill help you get more of old Honest Abe. Jean-Luc Godard’s French New Wave classic Weekendalso makes its Blu-ray premiere courtesy of the Criterion Collection.

This week also sees some BD love for film noirs, including the release of both the 1946 and 1981 versions of The Postman Always Rings Twice, as well as a box set from Olive Films which features Union Station (1950), Appointment with Danger (1951), Dark City (1950), and Rope of Sand (1949). Speaking of Olive Films, they’re also releasing The Otto Preminger Collectionthis week, which features three of the director’s more out-of-the-way films (1968’s Skidoois rather notorious in fact). Lastly, Synapse Films’ exclusive Blu-ray release of the documentary on George Romero’s original Dawn of the Dead,The Definitive Document of the Deadcomes out tomorrow, available directly from the company.

Well, that’s it for this week. There’s a ton of stuff, and while most of the new releases are pretty standard, there are quite a few exciting catalog releases.
